Part of a series of MCHIP Quality of Care tools, these structured clinical observation checklists are for use in observation of antenatal care (ANC) consultations and labor and delivery (vaginal deliveries only) at facilities. The content of the checklists was developed based on World Health Organization guidelines and includes: screening for pre-eclampsia/eclampsia (PE/E) in ANC; management of PE/E and prevention of postpartum hemorrhage in labor and delivery; and other interventions in labor and delivery—routine and correct use of the partograph, routine and correct use of active management of third stage of labor, infection prevention behaviors, provider-client interaction/communication, immediate essential newborn care, and newborn resuscitation.
