24 April 2013 To showcase recent developments and new directions in global immunization, the peer-reviewed medical journal Vaccine has published a special supplement this month on the Decade of Vaccines (DoV).  The vision for the DoV is a world in which all individuals and communities enjoy lives free from vaccine-preventable diseases. The "roadmap" for achieving this vision is captured in the Global Vaccine Action Plan. As we move into the third year of the DoV, this new supplement to Vaccine encourages the conversation around this major topic.
18 April 2013 Celebrations will begin next week in honor of the third African Vaccination Week (AVW). From 22-28 April, the Africa region will join the rest of the world in celebrating immunization week with a theme of “Save lives. Prevent disabilities. Vaccinate.”
16 April 2013 MCHIP’s Robert Steinglass moderated a session at the "Lives in the Balance: Delivering Medical Innovations to Neglected Patients and Populations" conference in December. The event, which attracted more than 500 key actors in global health and research and development from over 20 countries, featured lively discussions among participants. These included representatives of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), and Mount Sinai School of Medicine's Global Health Program.
From 15-18 April, the 2013 Global Newborn Health Conference: Accelerating the Scale-Up of Maternal and Newborn Health Interventions to Reduce Mortality is being held in Johannesburg, South Africa, with a welcome reception and optional supplementary session will be held prior to opening day, on 14 April 2013. Organized by MCHIP, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-supported Save the Children’s Saving Newborn Lives (SC/SNL), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), with additional support from John Snow, Inc., the Laerdal Foundation, and Jhpiego, this four-day meeting will focus on accelerating the scale-up of high-impact interventions that address the three major causes of newborn mortality: prematurity, birth asphyxia and infection.
Drawing on evidence from Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, and Nigeria, this article examines how the Global Polio Eradication Initiative utilized monitoring and evaluation data to focus and improve the quality and impact of communication activities.
This evaluation was conducted to improve understanding of the Reaching Every District (RED) implementation process, which aims to improve immunization systems in areas with low coverage by: reaching the target population; supportive supervision; on-site training; community links with service delivery; monitoring and use of data for action; better planning; and management of human and financial resources.
