Congratulations Goldy!

MCHIP’s Newborn Technical Adviser, Dr. Goldy Mazia, was recently awarded as an honorary member of the Lima/Callao Regional College of Midwives III in Peru during her participation in the International Meeting " trends and approaches for the development of the professional midwife". Dr. Mazia delivered a pre-meeting workshop on Global Priorities in Newborn Health Care and 3 presentations at the meeting addressing the various intervention strategies that can be applied for prevention of newborn mortality. One of the courses focused on the new training program “Helping Babies Breathe”, an initiative that MCHIP is implementing on behalf of a USAID-led public-private Global Development Alliance to provide birth attendants around the world with the skills necessary to provide newborn resuscitation for birth asphyxia.

Another relevant topic presented by Dr. Mazia was on the benefits of Delayed Cord Clamping during delivery, as it has a direct effect on the health of the newborns and young infants. Among the benefits is the prevention of anemia in infants at 6 months of age.

This conference was well attended with nearly 450 midwives travelling to Lima from throughout the country, all of whom were five-year graduates of the university.

Dean of Lima Callao Regional College III (CRO III), Elva Quinones Colchado highlighted the importance of proper trainings and education with the most up to date information possible. Providing midwives and front line healthcare providers with the necessary skills will significantly impact the life of a mother and child.
