Our very own Cat McKaig presented in India on how far we have come and how close we remain to making progress in integrating postpartum family planning into maternal and newborn services.
In setting the stage, Cat presented a multi-country analysis of unmet need for family planning globally. Because family planning during the first year postpartum has largely been neglected, the average rate of unmet need is greater than 60%. There are several contraceptive methods that are useful for postpartum women that are not well known. These include the lactational amenorrhea method and the postpartum IUCD. Both of these methods have great potential to help women prevent unintended pregnancies.
