Cervical Cancer Prevention for Women Living with HIV

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in developing countries. Moreover, women living with HIV are extremely vulnerable to developing cervical cancer, which is an AIDS defining condition.

MCHIP is working to integrate cervical cancer prevention using the single visit approach (SVA) into HIV care and treatment clinics, although women from the general population are also able to access these services. The SVA is a nurse-led intervention that combines screening using visual inspection with acetic acid with immediate treatment of pre-cancerous lesions using cryotherapy. Women with large lesions or suspected cancers are referred to a higher level of care for management.
